New port in Sochi to commence accepting cargo in late summer 2009

The new port of Basic Element (in Sochi) plans to commence accepting cargo in late summer 2009, PortNews IAA learnt from Yuri Tyamushkin, head of Basic Element port authority. According to the source the port is to reach its design capacity in the first half of 2010. The port will be operated as a cargo port for only five years after which it is to be converted.

The port is to occupy the territory of 5.1 hectares though ports with such a turnover usually cover twice as much the territory. Territorial optimization was based on application of special logistics technologies – the majority of dry bulk cargo will be taken directly to the customers’ storage facilities. The port is to cover major demand of the Olympics-2014 for dry bulk cargo.

As PortNews IAA reported earlier, Total investment into construction of Sochi port (including that of Basic Element and the state) will exceed RUR 12.9 bln. Basic Element subsidiary Port of Sochi Imeretinskiy JSC Vnesheconombank  for construction of the port’s cargo district at the mouth of Mzymta river.

As PortNews IAA learnt from Sergei Semenov, Development Director of Morstroitechnology (design organization), the port is to start operation as early as in late 2009. Design capacity is 5 million tonnes of cargo per year. In 2010 the throughput is expected to make 2 million tonnes. The port is to handle cement, crushed stone, rolled metal and general cargo. Al in all there will be 8 berths including 3 berths for dry bulk and 5 berths for general cargo. The depth is to make 9.2 m, vessel length - 140 m.
