Panama ports January throughput up 10.9%

Cargo volumes handled at Panamanian ports in January 2009 increased 10.9 percent year-on-year, Business News Americas reported.
On the Atlantic coast, Cristóbal port - operated by Panama Ports Company (PPC) - handled 25,529 TEUs, up 108 percent compared to 12,274 TEUs in January 2008.
Manzanillo International Container Terminal registered a 25.3 percent increase to 137,966 TEUs, from 110,119 TEUs.
Colon Container Terminal (CCT), however, saw a 25.5 percent drop to 41,636 TEUs.
On the Pacific coast, PPC-operated Balboa port handled 158,878 TEUs, up seven percent from 148,425 TEUs.
