Kaohsiung throughput down 10.99 percent to 551,000 TEUs in February

The official inauguration of the Taipei Port has compromised Kaohsiung port’s cargo-handling volume, Taiwan Economic News reported.
Kaohsiung Port handled 551,000 TEUs of containers in February, down 10.99 percent from the previous month for a new low since 2002.
Kaohsiung Port Bureau attributed the double-digit decline in TEUs handled partly to the impact of the global financial tsunami and partly to the official inauguration of the Taipei Port.
The three BOT (build-operate-transfer) shipping firms in the Taipei Port, including Evergreen Marine, Yangming Marine Transport and Wan Hai Lines, aim to switch operation from Kaohsiung Port to Taipei Port.
