Oman’s Salalah port volumes up 25 percent in 2008

Oman’s largest port has witnessed a 25% increase in general cargo volumes during 2008, driven largely by a combination of rising limestone exports and new activities in the Salalah Free Zone.
Throughput jumped from 2.783 million tones to 3.469 million tonnes over the course of last year, with containerised cargo rising from 2.639 million TEUs to 3.068 million TEUs.
“In addition to the general increase in related container activity, opportunities have arisen in other areas of the general cargo facility, in the form of limestone exports. The company is working closely with various stakeholders with regard to these opportunities,” said Martijn van de Linde, CEO of Port of Salalah, who was speaking to the Oman Daily Observer newspaper.
Added infrastructure has started to contain the capacity crunch recently seen at Salalah, and total terminal capacity is projected to reach five million TEU by the end of this year.
Three major shipping lines – Maersk Line – Mediterranean Shipping Company and American President Line – account for the entire throughput of the container terminal, and Salalah is banking on their continued support.
