An act of protest against Arctic pollution is being held in St. Petersburg. An activist with the environmental group in a polar bear suit who floated along the Moskva River on April 1 unfolded his banner “Arctic Not For Sale” and the sign HELP at the Fontanka embankment, IAA PortNews reporter says.
This is a protest of environmental organizations against Rosneft and Statoil plans as well as an appeal to support new “Arctic Not For Sale” initiative of Greenpeace.
The activist arrived in St. Petersburg to address the Norwegian Prime Minister with a personal request for help.
According to Greenpeace Russia, Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg agreed to meet with the ‘bear’ representative Ivan Blokov, Campaign Director, who delivered the message with the demand to reject a new risky oil venture in the Russian Arctic at the meeting held at the Norwegian Consulate.
As it was reported earlier, Statoil (Norway) and Rosneft (Russia) set up a joint venture for oil production in the Barents Sea. The decision on the project launch is to be confirmed on May 14 at the meeting of Statoil shareholders, the main of which is the state.
