The issue of NOx Emission Control Area (NECA) status for the Baltic Sea is not so simple and requires a balanced approach, IAA PortNews journalist cites the Chairman of RF Government Dmitry Medvedev as saying at the Baltic Sea Forum being held in St. Petersburg.
“When handling this issue it is necessary to take into consideration the common shipping practice of the Baltic Sea, all the more so, because we have not yet found any mission reduction methods to be efficient enough. In any case, when developing a solution, close cooperation is required with the colleagues from the North-East Atlantic to avoid “reinvention of a new wooden wheel”, Medvedev said.
He also announced that Russia supports the intention of the European Commission to commence monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions from vessels in the Baltic Sea and is willing to carry out this work in Russian ports of the Baltic Sea Basin.
