Baltic Sea NECA application to IMO to be made in the nearest future – Denmark

The application to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for a NOx Emission Control Area (NECA) status for the Baltic Sea should be made in the shortest time possible. According to IAA PortNews journalist, this was announced by Danish Minister for Trade and Investment Pia Olsen Dyhr at the Baltic Sea Forum in St. Petersburg.

The Minister says the issue has been solved already and Denmark will strive to formalize it in international legislation within the framework of the Danish HELCOM Chairmanship.

“We should give a sign to the shipping community so that it could adjust to new requirements,” Ms. Dyhr says.

To substantiate the necessity of new regulations the Danish Minister reminded the statistics, according to which ships are responsible for 20% of all nitrogen oxide emissions.

Denmark also ordered a study into the feasibility of the North Sea NECA application.
