Throughput of port Riga (Latvia) down 14.1% to 8.149 mln t in QI'13
In January-March 2013, the port of Riga (Latvia) handled 8,149,800 tonnes of cargo (-14.1%, year-on-year), IAA PortNews learnt from the port administration. Coal transshipment fell by 19.5% to 3.104 tonnes, oil product – by 14.4% to 2,070,400 tonnes, timber – by 15.6% to 471,00 tonnes, wood pellets – by 11.3% to 242,800 tonnes, scrap metal – by 17.5% to 133,300 tonnes, construction materials – by 67.8% to 8,800 tonnes, ore – by 82.3% to 16,600 tonnes.
The port’s container throughput increased by 8.3% to 94,128 TEUs. Passenger turnover grew by 6.9% to 157,357 persons including 5,054 passengers of cruise ships (+51.2%).
Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava covering 6.3 hectares. The port’s berth length is 13,800 meters, maximum draft at the berths is 12.2 meters. Up to 80% of the Freeport of Riga cargo turnover is made up of transit cargoes forwarded to or received from the CIS countries. In 2012, Freeport of Riga increased its throughput by 5.8%, year-on-year, to 36,051,900 tonnes of cargo.
