Transit navigation starts at Don river and Azov-and-Don canal
Transit navigation has been opened at the navigable routes of the lower Don and the Azov-and-Don canal, Azov-and-Don Basin Administration of Waterways and Navigation reports according to Interfax.
The transit navigation started ahead of schedule owing to good weather conditions and preparedness of hydraulic engineering structures, a source in the Administration says.
First vessels started to pass the above waterways on March 25.
In 2008, transit navigation at the lower Don lasted from April 1 till November 30. Last year 3,312 transited the Azov-and-Don Basin (1,623 upstream and 1,689 downstream).
The length of waterways within the competence of the Azov-and-Don Basin Administration of Waterways and Navigation is 800 kilometers.
