Intra-European container traffic to rise 7.8% to 9.7 million TEU by 2015 - Dynamar
The intra-European container traffic in Northern Europe, which amounted to around 9 million TEU last year, will continue to increase. Most growth is expected in the Baltic region. The Dutch consultancy Dynamar predicts that around 9.7 million containers will be transported (+7.8%) by 2015 (excluding the Mediterranean Sea), said in the company's press release.
According to Dynamar, Unifeeder is the most important shipping company in Northern Europe if the number of ships and connections is counted. However, MSC is even 28% larger in number of slots, because the Swiss shipping company uses very large tonnage on short sea services. Together, Unifeeder, MSC and CMA CGM control 49% of all intra-European capacity.
England and Ireland receive services from 21 container shipping companies, accounting for 14% of the total intra-European capacity. The Baltic region accounts for 31% while North-western Europe, as the most central region with the largest container ports, takes 46% of the pie.
