Nuclear fuel can be an alternative in SECAs - DNV

Nuclear fuel can be considered as an alternative marine fuel in sulphur emission control areas, PortNews journalist cites DNV representative Christos Chryssakis as saying at Alternative Fuel Conference in Helsinki arranged by Northern Dimension Partnership on Transport and Logistics. According to him, nuclear powered vessels do not produce pollutant emissions. However, there is a different environmental challenge here – nuclear waste management. Besides, there are safety aspects related to protection from terrorism. “However, I’m not sure we’re going to see nuclear fuel in future merchant shipping,” DNV representative said.

Other alternative fuels mentioned at the conference are liquefied natural gas (as the most prospective fuel), liquefied petroleum gas, methanol, biofuel, fuel elements.
