At the meeting of the Coordination Board on the development of the transport system of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region held on April 19, 2013 a decision was taken to set up a Directorate on the development of the transport system of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, press center of the city Governor’s Administration reports.

The meeting held by RF Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov was attended by St. Petersburg Governor Georgy Poltavchenko and the Leningrad region Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko.

The Directorate on the development of the transport system of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region will be a unified authority to control the development of proposals on the development and designing of transport infrastructure facilities in the city and the region. In particular, one of its priority activities is to facilitate cooperation of the federal center and the constituent entity of the Federation including enhanced financing of the construction of transport facilities. There is also a task to improve the role of the regions in the development of national transport communications.

The constituent documents of the Directorate are to be approved by May 15. One of the first tasks of the Directorate will be the updating and the adjustment of the regional programme on the development of the municipal and regional transport system till 2020. Georgy Poltavchenko proposed to include the regional programme into the federal one.

Besides, Georgy Poltavchenko, Maxim Sokolov and Aleksandr Drozdenko signed an Agreement on cooperation in the development of St. Petersburg and Leningrad region transport system till 2020. Georgy Poltavchenko and Aleksandr Drozdenko also signed an Agreement on the development of St. Petersburg metro system and transport interchange hubs.

Georgy Poltavchenko noted that between the city and the region large industrial and residential territories appear in new perimeter zones while the traffic arteries between the historical districts and the new town-planning centers have exhausted their potential. The region’s transport system is not keeping up the growing flows.

Georgy Poltavchenko emphasized the necessity to develop the passenger transport to lessen the route’s burden. “A balanced approach is needed for the development of passenger transport as an alternative to personal vehicles and to develop interchange hubs. Further development of St. Petersburg as a strong economic center and transport hub is impossible without solving these problems,” the Governor said.
