Throughput of Klaipeda port down 17.9% to 6.5 mln t in Q1 09

In the first quarter of 2009, the port of Klaipeda handled 6.477 million tonnes of cargo (-17.9%, year-on-year), the port informs.

In the reported period transshipment of liquid cargo fell by 12.2% to 2.652 million tonnes, general cargo – by 24.6%, to 1.748 million tonnes.

In the 3-month period the port transshipped 63,400 TEU (-27%, year-on-year). The port handled 1,700 vessels (-4.8%) and serviced 35,900 passengers (-14.6%).

Klaipeda State Seaport is the northernmost ice-free port on the Eastern coast of the Baltic Sea.

19 big stevedoring companies, ship - repair and ship – building yards operate within the port and all marine business and cargo handling services are being rendered. The annual port cargo handling capacity is up to 40 million tons. The port is capable of handling dry cargo carriers of up to 70,000 tonnes in deadweight and tankers of up to 100,000 tonnes in deadweight. In 2008, the port handled 29.877 million tonnes of cargo.
