On March 4, 2013, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co.Ltd. (S.Korea) launched the first semi-refrigerator LPG carrier ordered by Sovcomflot Group (SCF) for operation under the contract with the chemical holding SIBUR, SCF says in its press release.
The tanker will be constructed under the supervision of two classification societies – Lloyd’s Register and Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.
State-of-the-art gas carriers are designed in compliance with all international requirements and standards. The cargo system comprises 4 C-type tanks with total capacity of 20,600 cubic metres for transportation of cargo under the pressure of 540 kPa. The delivery of the lead ship, the Sibur Voronezh, is scheduled for mid July of the current year.
Technical characteristics of the vessel: Length: 159 m, Beam size: 25.60 m, Depth: 16.40m, Estimated draught: 10.90 m, Deadweight: 22,760 tonnes, Propulsion engine power: 7,780kw.
The LPG tankers of 20,600 cubic metres capacity were designed with SCF specialists participation in accordance with SIBUR’s requirements and the recent technical achievements. The ships have a number of competitive advantages over existing vessels of this type.
The tankers’ design include the system of ballast water treatment which must be installed on board the ships starting from 2013. The hull will be enhanced in accordance with the requirements for structural strength calculation for the year-round operation in the conditions of North Atlantic region during 25 years, which will allow to significantly increase the ships’ length of service in normal conditions. The tankers’ ice class 1B (Ice3 – in accordance with Russian Register of shipping classification) makes it possible to operate the ships effectively in low temperatures of the Baltic Sea during winter navigation.
SCF gas carrier fleet includes eight vessels: six LNG (liquefied natural gas) carriers and two LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) carriers. These ships are in operation on long-term contracts with well-known gas companies, such as: Sakhalin Energy, Shell, Gas Natural, Transammonia, and others.
SCF Group’s shipbuilding programme provides for the expansion of its gas carrier fleet to include an additional six vessels. Four LPG tankers and two LNG carriers are currently under construction. All vessels are already engaged in operations according to long-term agreements with the world’s largest gas companies – Gazprom Global LNG, Shell and SIBUR.
SCF’s development strategy provides for the further expansion of the company’s LPG shipping operations, including provision for the development of new industrial projects in Russia’s Arctic north. The company’s longstanding experience of oil & gas shipping in challenging icy conditions means SCF can offer effective year-round LNG transportation solutions for even the most complex projects.
