Transit navigation starts at Volga-Baltic Waterway, IAA PortNews learnt from Vladimir Nikolayev, Head of Volga-Balt Administration. The first transit vessel passed under St. Petersburg bridges on the night of May 5^th/6^th. The vessel of Volgo-Don type carried metal cargo from the Volga.

In 2012, cargo traffic along the major route of the Volga-Baltic Waterway climbed by 1.3%, year-on-year, to 22.4 mln t.
