Throughput of port Riga (Latvia) down 11.3% to 11.1 mln t in Jan-Apr’13

In January-April 2013, the port of Riga (Latvia) handled 11.1 mln t of cargo (-11.3%, year-on-year), IAA PortNews learnt from the port authority. In the accounting period, coal transshipment fell by 16.9% to 4.19 mln t, oil product – by 12.3% to 2.79 mln t, timber – by 10.9% to 663,500 tonnes, wood pellets – by 12.8% to 328,000 tonnes, grain – 4,3 times to 53,400 tonnes, while transshipment of chemical  cargoes surged by 33.1% to 503,000 tonnes.

The port’s container throughput increased by 5% to 123,820 TEUs. Transshipment of Ro-Ro cargoes was almost the same as in January-April 2012 making 186,900 tonnes.

Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava covering 6.3 hectares. The port’s berth length is 13,800 meters, maximum draft at the berths is 12.2 meters. Up to 80% of the Freeport of Riga cargo turnover is made up of transit cargoes forwarded to or received from the CIS countries. In 2012,  Freeport of Riga increased its throughput by 5.8%, year-on-year, to 36,051,900 tonnes of cargo.
