New port planned for construction in Liinahamari to handle 15 mln t of oil annually
New port capable of handling 15 mln t of oil and 4 mln t of fertilizers per year is planned for the construction in Liinahamari (Murmansk region, Barents Sea). According to IAA PortNews journalist, this was announced by Sergey Kudrinitsky, Director General of Managing Company Sea Port Liinahamri LLC at the round table meeting “Development strategy of Russian transport infrastructure in Arctic: regional aspect” held in Moscow within Murmansk Day framework.
The project implies the construction of an off-harbour crude transshipment complex designed by Soyuzmorniiproekt. It is to comprise a storage tanker (320,000-tonne VLCC with the draught of 20 meters) to be placed 80 meters from the berths of Devkin Bay port (Barents Sea, 150 km westwards from Murmansk). The nominal turnover of the complex is 15 mln t per year. The project is to be submitted for environmental assessment before the end of this year.
Besides, the comprehensive project on the port construction provides for a creation of a multipurpose transshipment complex for transshipment of mineral fertilizers up to 4 mln t per year. The complex is to comprise 2 berths with total length of 575 meters. As Sergey Kudrinitsky explained, to create the rear territory of the terminal it is necessary to cut 1.6 mln cubic meters of rocky soil. Mineral fertilizers are to be delivered to the new terminal by railway till Liinahamari station 6 km off the port (presently abandoned). Then mineral fertilizers can be delivered to the port accepting 175,000-dwt vessels (Capesize). This complex is also being designed by Soyuzmorniiproekt.
Moreover, the company considers a possibility to place off-harbour FSP for accumulation of modules for construction of LNG plant in Sabetta (Yamal).
Negotiations are currently being held with potential investors into the project. No names of possible investing companies or project value are disclosed.
In May 2012, a decision was taken to convert a fishing farm Liinahamari into a seaport. Managing Company Sea Port Liinahamri LLC has signed a contract of lease on 40,800-squre km plot for 49 years. The port’s feature is natural depth. It also has VTMS facilities. No fairway construction or dredging is required. The port borders high rocks and has natural wave cutters, wave height does not exceed 2 meters. This non-freezing port is 4 miles from the Barents Sea entrance. It is located close to Norwegian border.
