In January-July, 2013, the port of Liepaja (Latvia) handled 2,777,000 tonnes of cargo (-31.5%, year-on-year), IAA PortNews learnt from the port administration. Transshipment of grain cargo dropped by 40.4% to 904,600 tonnes, timber materials – by 33% to 319,500 tonnes, construction materials – by 2.7% to 259,600 tonnes.
In the 7-month period transshipment of ferrous metal fell by 28% to 182,400 tonnes (no changes registered in July), non-ferrous metals – by 51.8% to 75,900, scrap metal – by 85.8% to 59,800 tonnes, coal – by 62.3% to 51,400 tonnes, while transshipment of wood pellets climbed by 41.8% to 108,200 tonnes.
The port’s container throughput climbed by 17% to 2,965 TEUs. Transshipment of Ro-Ro cargoes increased by 17% to 18,760 units. The number of calls dropped by 24% to 796 calls.
The port of Liepaja is the third busiest port of Latvia. Half of its turnover is formed by oil products and dry loose cargo from CIS countries, mainly Belorus. In 2012, the port of Liepaja handled 7.43 mln tonnes of cargo.
