In January-July, 2013, the port of Riga (Latvia) handled 20,270,300 tonnes of cargo (7.7%, year-on-year), IAA PortNews learnt from the port authority. In the 7-month period, coal transshipment fell by 12.3% to 7,807,700 tonnes, oil products – by 12.3% to 4,463,700 tonnes, wood chips – by 6.7% to 554,400 tonnes, frain cargoes – by 83.4% to 68,300 tonnes; transshipment of chemical cargoes vlimbed by 8.4% to 966,600 tonnes.
The port’s container throughput climbed by 1.5% to 216,316 TEUs. Transshipment of Ro-Ro increased by 3.2% to 347,900 tonnes.
Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava covering 6.3 hectares. The port’s berth length is 13,800 meters, maximum draft at the berths is 12.2 meters. Up to 80% of the Freeport of Riga cargo turnover is made up of transit cargoes forwarded to or received from the CIS countries. In 2012, Freeport of Riga increased its throughput by 5.8%, year-on-year, to 36,051,900 tonnes of cargo.
