An official launching ceremony was held Monday at Kerala state-based Cochin shipyard for the first home-designed and built aircraft carrier, BBC reported.
After this first phase of construction the ship will be re-docked for outfitting and further construction.
Sea trials of the 37,500 tonne, 260m-long, 60m-wide INS Vikrant are scheduled for 2016. The warship will join the country's Navy fleet by 2018.
So now, India may join a select club of countries capable of building such a vessel, like the US, the UK, Russia and France.
