Baltic ports to meet in Klaipeda

Challenges for the Baltic ports in future market conditions will be a theme of the Baltic Ports Conference 2013. The Conference is an associated event with BPO General Assembly. The meeting will take place in Klaipeda, Lithuania on 5-6 of September 2013, the event organizer Baltic Ports Organization (BPO) said in a press release.

The conference will begin with official speeches to be made by representatives of, Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania, Klaipeda City and Klaipeda State Seaport Authority.

Following discussion will focus on the new EU port policy and the consequences for the ports.

Mr. Dimitrios Theologitis from DG MOVE, European Commission will present the review of the EU port policy. Panel reaction will be given by national port organization and ports from the Baltic region.

Moreover, the macroeconomic and trade developments (including container market) in the Baltic Sea and its hinterlands will be discussed. Serving the markets in EuroAsia is the subject that will be covered during the second part of the conference.

The second day of the event will be dedicated to environmental challenges for shipping and ports after 2015 – the date when the new sulfur limits for emission from shipping will be introduced in the Baltic. During the panel session invited experts will debate and look for answer on how ports should be prepared for new environmental challenges.

“During the BPO Conference in Klaipeda, apart from SECA’s questions and port policy, we will look into the recent trends in the transport market in the region and hinterland connection with EuroAsian markets, which are very relevant for ports from Eastern part of the Baltic” – said Bogdan Oldakowski, Secretary General of the Baltic Ports Organization.

The Baltic Ports Organization (BPO) is a co-operation between more than 40 major ports in the Baltic Sea Region including Russian ports. The aim of the organization is to improve the competitiveness of maritime transports within the region and to promote policies and viewpoints of the ports in the Baltic with relevant international bodies.
