Sakhalinugol introduces new technology at its terminals to boost coal exports

LLC Management Company "Sakhalinugol" has implemented a modern technology of loading of large 56,000DWT bulk carriers at offshore anchorage of the port of Shakhtersk. The introduced technology enabled the company to load on average 17,000 tonnes of bulk cargo a day, Sakhalinugol said on Friday.

In 2012, the average daily rate was only 5,000 tonnes, while loading 40,000dwt bulk carriers, the company said.

The technology became possible thanks to the acquisition of modern vessels. Recently, the Sakhalinugol has expended its fleet with a new ship, the M/V  Stavropol. The company did not disclose the vessel’s specifications and details.

Over the past two years, the company has invested in modernization of the port of Shakhtersk about RUB 350 million. Sakhalinugol has upgraded its export coal handling terminal, purchased and installed new handling equipment, including a conveyor system and a ship loader. Storage areas have been greatly expanded, adding new front end loader (bucket capacity of 6.5 cbm) and a hydraulic excavator. For unloading / loading of coal cargo the operator purchased new hydraulic grab (capacity 14 cbm). The upgraded coal handling complex is now able to transship up to 2,000 tonnes of cargo an hour.

By mid-August of this year, the seaport of Shakhtersk has shipped more than 700,000 tonnes of export coal. Overall, coal producers have exported through Uglegorsk and Boshnyakovo terminals in Shakhtersk more than 1 million tonnes of coal.

LLC MC Sakhalinugol is the largest mining company in the Sakhalin region. Sakhalinugol coordinates the work of coal mining, transport and processing companies of the industry. In 2012, total output of coal enterprises reached more than 2 million tonnes. Coal shipments to customers totaled 1,832,000 tonnes, including 1.278 million tonnes exported to other countries.
