In January-August 2013, the port of Liepaja (Latvia) handled 3,128,500 tonnes of cargo (-32.4%, year-on-year). As IAA PortNews learnt from the port authority, grain transshipment fell by 38.5% to 1,036,600 tonnes, timber materials – by 31.5% to 382,300 tonnes, construction materials – by 16.1% to 297,700 tonnes .
Transshipment of ferrous metal fell by 45.8% to 182,400 tonnes (no changes during the last month), non-ferrous metals – down 52.4% to 79,200 tonnes, scrap metal – down 86.1% to 59,800 tonnes (no changes during the last month), coal – down 69.6% to 51,400 tonnes (no changes during the last month), wood pellets – up 32.8% to 114,900 tonnes.
The port’s container throughput climbed by 10% to 3,276 TEUs, transshipment of Ro-Ro cargoes was up 14% to 21,595 units. The number of calls fell by 27% to 891 calls.
The port of Liepaja is the third busiest port of Latvia. Half of its turnover is formed by oil products and dry loose cargo from CIS countries, mainly Belorus. In 2012, the port of Liepaja handled 7.43 mln tonnes of cargo.
