RS defines major activities to improve requirements for icegoing vessels

Russian Maritime Register of Shipping has defined major activities to improve requirements for icegoing vessels with consideration of the latest trends in the development of Arctic shipping. According to RS press center, this was announced at the technical session “Development of Arctic shipbuilding and shipping” with Krylov State Research Center as moderator.

According to Mikhail Kutelnikov, head of the department for hull design and fitting, Russia has been a leader in Arctic shipping for decades owing to the geographic position, therefore Russian Maritime Register of Shipping is a global leader in classification and technical supervision of icegoing vessels.

In this context, one of the main tasks of RS is to preserve its unique experience and to expand the range of innovative technical solutions.

Kutelnikov emphasized the following activities to improve the Register’s legal framework applicable to arctic shipping: to create and maintain a flexible system for classification of icegoing vessels; to ensure structural toughness of vessels in the areas of ice load impact; introduction of signs of enhanced security and winterization.

Besides, it is necessary to carry out research in the sphere of structural toughness of icegoing gas carriers as well as reliability of natural gas storage systems; improve safety standards for icegoing vessels’ propulsion complex; improve methods for evaluation of ice loads at offshore facilities.

Kutelnikov also noted that the Register is engaged in intense cooperation with the leading foreign companies implementing innovating activities in designing of state-of-the-art arctic gas carriers, for example, GazTransport & Technigaz (GTT).
