First LNG-powered icebreaker to be built in Finland

Finland plans to build the first LNG-powered icebreaker, IAA PortNews journalist cites Mikko Niini, Managing Director of Aker Arctic Technology, as saying at the International Conference “Arctic shipping and shelf development: solutions to meet safety and environment challenges” held in Saint-Petersburg within the framework of the programme dedicated to the centenary of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.

According to him, the contract for icebreaker design is to be signed in late 2013. The shipyard is to be selected upon the competition results. The vessel is expected to be built in late 2016. She will be deployed by marine authorities of Finland for operation in the Baltic Sea.

Besides, the company is to implement orders on designing an Arctic icebreaker for Canada as well as for China.
