RF Fishery Agency says construction of port Sabetta causes unprecedented damage of aquatic bioresources

The Federal Fishery Agency of the Russian Federation has coordinated projects on 4 facilities with expected total damage of aquatic bioresources to make 8,500 tonnes including 2.5 tonnes of permanent damage, the Agency says. Besides, annual damage caused dredging works is expected to make 845 tonnes. With the facility’s service life of 30 years, annual dredging will result in over 25,000 tonnes of damage; 50 years – over 42,000 tonnes).

The damage is supposed to be compensated by release of different fishes (muksun, peled, sturgeon). The amount of peled alone is to make 1.5 bln. The damage extent is beyond comparison. For example, 31 fish farms on Sakhalin annually release 780 mln of baby salmon.

There are no fish farms in the North Siberian Fishery Basin able to ensure the release of this scope. Besides, annual receiving capacity of Ob Bay is limited by 200 mln baby fish.

The Agency sees the solution in execution of the presidential order as of October 15, 2013 (No Pr-2416) according to which the involved federal authorities and business units are to elaborate draft projects aimed at optimization of compensatory activities.

The Fishery Agency welcomes project documentation or proposals from Yamal LNG OJSC on compensation of the damage with baby fish release, reclamation work, introduction of new or reconstruction of the existing production facilities.

As the implementation of Sabetta project causes damage of federally owned aquatic bioresources, the introduction of new or reconstruction of the existing production facilities can be applied to federally owned fish farms.
