In January-October 2013, Freeport of Riga (Latvia) handled 29,454,800 t of cargo (-2.8%, year-on-year), IAA PortNews learnt from the port authorities. Coal transshipment declined by 8% to 11,517,000 t, oil products – by 8.5% to 6,007,500 t, wood chips – by 6.3% to 779,400 t, grain – by 60.5% to 237,900 t, while transshipment of chemical cargoes increased by 3.6% to 1,211,500 t.
The port’s container throughput climbed by 4.5% to 318,628 TEUs. Transshipment of ro-ro cargo was up 1.2% to 500,200 t.
Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava covering 6.3 hectares. The port’s berth length is 13,800 meters, maximum draft at the berths is 12.2 meters. Up to 80% of the Freeport of Riga cargo turnover is made up of transit cargoes forwarded to or received from the CIS countries. In 2012, Freeport of Riga increased its throughput by 5.8%, year-on-year, to 36,051,900 tonnes of cargo.
