Throughput of port Liepaja (Latvia) down 34.9% to 4.84 mln t in 2013

In 2013, throughput of port Liepaja (Latvia) dropped by 34.9% to 4.84 mln t, IAA PortNews learnt from the port Administration. Transshipment of grain cargo fell by 34.8% to 1.92 mln t, timber – by 35.8% to 519,500 t, construction materials – by 15.7% to 449,800 t, oil products – by 2.3% to 175,000 t, crude oil – by 2.8% to 144,800 t. Transshipment of ferrous metals fell by 62.6% to 182,400 t, non-ferrous metal – by 63.5% to 134,100 t.

The port’s container throughput climbed by 10% to 4,530 TEUs. Transshipment of ro-ro cargo cargo increased by 5% to 31,110 units. Passenger flow surged by 29% to 21,770 persons. The number of calls dropped by 29% to 1,308 vessels.

The port of Liepaja is the third busiest port of Latvia. Half of its turnover is formed by oil products and dry loose cargo from CIS countries, mainly Belorus. In 2012, the port of Liepaja handled 7.43 mln tonnes of cargo.
