Two azipods intended for diesel-electric icebreaker ЛК-25 Victor Chernomyrdin (project 22600) were delivered by Dutch vessel Lady Magda (Wijnne & Barends - Delfzijl, Netherlands) to Baltiysky Zavod shipyard (Saint-Petersburg) in on January 22, 2014. Press center of Baltiysky Zavod has confirmed this information for IAA PortNews.
Azipod allows ships to be more maneuverable and efficient. Because it can rotate around its mount axis, the pod can apply its thrust in any direction. Besides, Azipod saves place in engine room which is important for cargo vessels as well as for icebreakers, tug boats and warships.
Icebreaker of Project 22600 was laid down by Baltiysky Zavod on October 10, 2012. Under the contract valued at RUB 7.94 bln (almost EUR 200 mln), the vessel is to be delivered to the customer (FSUE Rosmorport) in December 2015.
The icebreaking vessel will be powered by 25MW diesel-electric engines. This will enable the icebreaker to break the 2-m-thick ice and escort merchant shps to the ports and on the Northern Sea Route. The vessel was designed for multipurpose tasks including salvage operations in harsh environment of the Arctic and to assist scientific expeditions.
