Throughput of port Riga (Latvia) up 19.3% to 6.526 mln t in Jan-Feb'14

In January-February 2014, port of Riga (Latvia) handled 6,526,800 t of cargo (+19.3%, year-on-year), IAA PortNews learnt from the port authorities. In the reported period, coal transshipment climbed by 7.8%, year-on-year, to 2.258 mln t, oil products – by 40.9% to 1,902,800 t. At the same time, transshipment of timber fell by 2.3% to 322,600 t, wood pellets – by 38.7% to 101,700, metal scrap – by 16.4% to 86,300 t. Besides, the port handled 49,400 t of ore.

The port’s container throughput climbed by 0.1% to 61,321 TEUs. Passenger turnover climbed by 5.3% to 103,232 persons including 3,042 cruise passengers (-39.8%).

Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava covering 6.3 hectares. The port’s berth length is 13,800 meters, maximum draft at the berths is 12.2 meters. Up to 80% of the Freeport of Riga cargo turnover is made up of transit cargoes forwarded to or received from the CIS countries. In 2013, the port’s throughput declined by 1.6%, year-on-year, to 35,466,700 t of cargo.
