Vessel Traffic Service (vessel traffic control system) for tankers provides for reduction of sea accident rate by 20-25% per year, IAA PortNews journalist cites General Director of the Finnish Transport Agency Juhani Tervala as saying Thursday at St. Petersburg Logistics Days conference.
The conference was organized by the German-Finnish Chamber of Commerce, the Port of Hamburg and media group IAA PortNews.
«VTS control system monitors the vessel traffic. If the system warns about possible collision we can promptly contact vessel’s captain and prevent the tragedy,” Juhani Tervala says.
Mr. Tervala noted that all ports of the Gulf of Finland freeze in winter. “The winter lasts for over 100 days a year so we find new methods of operation during winter navigation,” he said. According to Juhani Tervala, there are many systems allowing prevention of accidents and incidents through the monitoring of vessel traffic. “Any vessel accident is a big tragedy, especially if it is a passenger ferry carrying thousands of people. We strive to prevent such disasters,” he emphasized.
