Throughput of port Riga (Latvia) up 15.9% to 20.17 mln t in HI’14

In January-June 2014, the Freeport of Riga (Latvia) handled 20,173,500 t of cargo (+15.9%, year-on-year). As IAA PortNews was informed by the port authority, coal transshipment climbed by 9.2% to 7,349,100 t, oil products – surged by 35.9% to 5,407,000 t, timber – by 4% to 1,077,800 t, wood pellets – down 46% to 262,900 t, scrap metal – up 12% to 496,400 t, ore – up 43.3% to 199,100 t.

The port’s container throughput increased by 1.1% to 185,916 TEUs. Passenger turnover climbed by 2.7% to 397,752 persons including 23,721 cruise passengers (-23.3%).

Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava covering 6.3 hectares. The port’s berth length is 13,800 meters, maximum draft at the berths is 12.2 meters. Up to 80% of the Freeport of Riga cargo turnover is made up of transit cargoes forwarded to or received from the CIS countries. In 2013, the port’s throughput declined by 1.6%, year-on-year, to 35,466,700 t of cargo.
