Presence of icebergs in the Kara Sea requires special approach to platforms’ design, IAA PortNews was told by Rosneft referring to Andrey Shishkin, Vice President of the Company. As a result of research made by Rosneft, the Arctic Research and Design Center for Shelf Developments and the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute in 2012-13, it was established that the most active iceberg-producing region is the glaciers off the eastern shore of the Novaya Zemlya. The typical linear size of an iceberg is not large and amounts to 40-60 meters.
At the same time, in May 2013, near the shore of the Novaya Zemlya, they discovered a frozen-in iceberg with the tip of 70 x 70 x 12 meters and the bottom depth of up to 50 meters.
While most icebergs remain aground near glaciers and disintegrate in summer, their presence requires a special approach to the design of platforms for round-the-year production of hydrocarbons in the Kara Sea.
