In January 2015, the Freeport of Riga (Latvia) handled 3,504,900 t of cargo (+8.3%, year-on-year). As IAA PortNews was informed by the port authority, coal transshipment climbed by 18.7% to 1,308,800, transshipment of oil products declined by 7.1% to 919,500, wood pellets – dropped by 26.4% to 40,200, scrap metal – surged almost 2-fold to 97,200 t, ore – down 2.5 times to 12,900 t.
The port’s container throughput increased by5.7% to 30,082 TEUs. Passenger turnover fell by 40.6% to 31,711 persons.
Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava covering 6.3 hectares. The port’s berth length is 13,800 meters, maximum draft at the berths is 12.2 meters. Up to 80% of the Freeport of Riga cargo turnover is made up of transit cargoes forwarded to or received from the CIS countries. In 2014, the port’s throughput totaled 41.08 mln t.
