Freight traffic at Nikolaev Sea Trade Port rose 7.3% in Jan-Feb., to 3,4 million tonnes

Cargo throughput at Ukraine based Nikolaev Sea Trade Port in January-February 2015 increased by 7.3% to 3,4 million tonnes, the Cetre for Transport Strategies (CTS) reported citing the Authority of Ukraine Seaports.

Handling of liquid bulk cargo dropped 23% year-on-year and reached 350,000 tonnes. Petroleum products shipments shank by 26.4% to 163,000 tonnes. Vegetable oil volume fell 28.8% to 146,000 tonnes. Handling of chemical cargoes plummeted by 57% to 5,000 tonnes.

The volume of dry bulk cargo in the reporting period rose 14% to 2.446 million tonnes. Coal volume edged down 1.2% to 300,000 tonnes. Coke exports soared nearly 17 times to 151,000 tonnes, of ore – by 14.5% to 676,000 tonnes. Grain shipments totaled 1.067 million tonnes (+4,6%).

The port handled 612,000 tonnes of break bulk cargo, which represents a 6.3% gain. The largest share in this segment was metal – 525,000 tonnes (however, metal volume was 4.8% down year-on-year). Also the port handled 46,000 tonnes of ferrous scrap (up 3.6 times) and the 38,000 tonnes of iron.

Port of Nikolayev (Port of Mykolayiv) was found in 1789. The port located at the mouth of the Southern Buh River and have access to the Black Sea through a 44-mile shipping canal. The port is a key transportation hub in Ukraine’s southern region. The port stevedore company is the state-owned company Sea Trading Port of Nikolayev specializing in handling general and bulk cargoes, grain, ore, metal, pipes, etc. The port has indoor and outdoor warehouses and operates 15 berths equipped with rail tracks.
