On the 24th of November 2015 Containerships signed an LNG supply agreement with Shell confirming earlier announced plans of bringing LNG fuel technology to European shortsea container logistics.
Containerships is preparing to receive the first of 6 new build dual-fuel engine-technology container vessels to its fleet in 2017. All vessels will use liquefied natural gas (LNG) as their main fuel and are able to burn conventional marine diesel oil/heavy fuel if necessary
Containerships has chosen Shell as a key partner to supply and bunker LNG. The contract includes bunkering of LNG for the first four Containerships LNG vessels. The bunkering location will be the Port of Rotterdam. The technical design of the vessels allows for only one bunkering location within a normal "loop".
The newly signed LNG supply contract brings Shell and Containerships together with a key role in making LNG a real alternative marine fuel within the North and Baltic Sea. With the arrival of the new vessels Containerships will be the first shortsea container operator in Europe to run ships on LNG.
