Cargo shipments by North-Western Shipping Company up 8% to 2.6 mln t in HI’2016

In HI’2016 the vessels of North-Western Shipping Company (NWSC, part of UCLHolding) carried 2.6 mln t of cargo (+8%, year-on-year), the Company said in a press release.

New vessels of North-Western Shipping Company - 10 vessels of Project DCV36 (lead ship – Ametist) and 7 vessels of Project RSD49 (Neva-Lider) – carried 0.8 mln t of cargo (over 30% of the total volume).

The structure of shipping did not undergo any significant changes during the first half of 2016. The following shipments were made:  grain – 802,000 t (+50%), ferrous metal – 387,000 (-25%), chemical and mineral fertilizers – 420,000 (-8%), coal – 336,000 t (up 2-fold), non-ferrous metal – 118,000 t (+8%), timber – 121,000 (-29%), metal scrap – 118,000 t (+8%), construction materials – 85,000 t (up 2.3 times), other cargoes – 237,000 t.

Exports with totaled 1.9 mln t accounted for 73% of the total traffic (up 26%). Exports were mostly formed by grain – 665,000 (+ 52%), ferrous metal – 350,000 t (-22%), coal – 319,000 t (up 2-fold), chemical and mineral fertilizers – 283,000 (+ 82.6%), non-ferrous metal – 66,000 t (+50%).

The transportation between foreign ports amounting to 579,000 t (22% of the total volume) fell by 26% mostly due to reduction in transportation of the major types of cargo in that sector – timber, ferrous and non-ferrous metal, fertilizers.  

The volume of import cargo carried by the shipping company fell by  29% to 87,000 t which was caused by the reduction in transportation of ferrous metal, construction cargo and fertilizers from the European countries to Russia. The share of imports in the general volume of traffic equaled to 3.3% in HI’2016.

Domestic transportation, mostly construction cargoes totaled 63,000 t, up 4.5 times.

North-Western Shipping Company, part of VBTH, a shipping division of UCL Holding, is the largest carrier in the Russian system of waterways, specializing on the export and import shipping of bulk, general and project cargoes, towages of oversized cargo and craft. The company provides a full range of transport services on the inland waterways of Russia and international sea traffic.

The company operates a fleet of 46 river/sea class vessels, 10 sea class vessels and 3 Ro-Ro «river-sea» barges. Total deadweight of the Company's fleet is 270,000 tonnes with vessel average age of 15 years. The company transports about 5 mln t of cargo per year.
