Crewless ships will come into use for inland and short sea navigation within a five-year period, IAA PortNews correspondent cites Deputy Transport Minister of Russia – Head of Federal Marine and River Transport Agency Victor Olersky, as saying at the industry-focused conference “Russian shipping: looking into the future”.
According to his forecast, introduction of crewless ships in international maritime navigation is to begin in 10-15 years as it requires the development of special international laws.
As Sergei Generalov, President of Industrial Investors Group – member of the Presidium of the Presidential Council for Economic Modernisation and Innovations, said at the conference, Russia has everything needed to become a leader in development of crewless navigation, e-navigation and energy efficiency of ships provided that proper state support is provided.
