Hapag-Lloyd receives “GoGreen Carrier Certificate” award from DHL GF
Hapag-Lloyd has received the “GoGreen Carrier Certificate” from DHL Global Forwarding (DHL GF) for the second time in a row. DHL uses this distinction to recognize the development of Hapag-Lloyd’s environmental-protection efforts in the 2016 business year, the shipping company said in a media release.
The GoGreen carrier rating is an integral part of the overall evaluation of the transport companies DHL works with. Having an above-average rating is a prerequisite for being classified by DHL as a “core carrier.” In each of the last two years, Hapag-Lloyd has earned the highest-possible score with the “GoGreen Carrier Certificate.”
The evaluation is made up of four criteria: cooperation, CO2 efficiency, transparency and environmental engagement. Having once again satisfied these criteria in 2016, Hapag-Lloyd was awarded four “green ships,” the best rating possible. In the future, DHL GF plans to have additional criteria to go into the rating, such as social aspects. “Our goal is definitely to earn the highest possible score under the higher future standards of DHL GF, too,” says Erika Sagert, Director Sustainability Management at Hapag-Lloyd.
The following aspects had a positive impact on the rating in the respective criteria:
Cooperation
Member of the Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG): For more than 14 years, Hapag-Lloyd has been member of this initiative, which is actively being taken care of by the Sustainability Management of Hapag-Lloyd. CCWG is dedicated to improving the environmental performance of marine container transports through measurement, evaluation and reporting.
CO2 Efficiency
Since 2006, Hapag-Lloyd has lowered the specific C02 emissions of its container transports by 45 percent while continually improving its CO2 efficiency. On 10 trade lanes the Hapag-Lloyd CO2 factors were below the CO2 benchmarks set by DHL GF, including five trade lanes with a substantially lower factor.
Transparency
Environmental performance data (e.g. regarding CO2 emissions), which are calculated by Hapag-Lloyd itself, are being reviewed and verified by independent third parties.
Environmental Engagement
Hapag-Lloyd’s environmental engagement is not exclusively limited to reducing CO2 emissions. The fact that Hapag-Lloyd vessels use fuel that contains much less sulphur than the limit stipulated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) also had a positive impact on the ranking.
