Nuclear-powered icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy sets a record having reached the North Pole for 79 hours
FSUE Atomflot says its nuclear-powered icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy has set a new record having reached the North Pole for 79 hours. According to the statement, the icebreaker reached the point of destination on August 17, at 02:33.
This voyage of the 50 Let Pobedy icebreaker (August 13-23) is to commemorate the expedition of icebreaker Arktika which reached the North Pole 40 years ago. In 1977, the icebreaker’s voyage to the top of the world took 176 hours.
“This expedition of the nuclear-powered icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy is the 124th voyage made by surface vessels to reach the North Pole, - says Aleksey Smirnov, Fleet Operations Deputy to Director General of FSUE Atomflot, adding that 111 voyages were made by Russian and soviet vessels”.
Moreover, a personal record was set by Dmitry Lobusov, Captain of the 50 Let Pobedy icebreaker, who reached the North Pole 24 times in a position of Captain. The previous record holder was Aleksandr Lembrik, Captain of nuclear-powered icebreaker Yamal.
