August 2017 became the best month for cargo volumes in the long and busy history of the Port of New York and New Jersey, the company said in its press release.
The monthly total of 361,565 lifts (631,404 TEUs) crushed the previous monthly high of 339, 601 lifts (588,918 TEUs) logged in July 2015.
August 2017 also fared 7.8% better than the previous year’s volumes (August 2016). At close of August 2017, the port beat 2016 overall lifts by 6.2%.
At 51,115 lifts, August 2017 rail volumes were 3.0% better than August 2016, qualifying August 2017 as the best rail month in Port history. Year-to-date rail volumes are 2.7% better than last year.
Import loads for the August 2017 (183,466 lifts, 320,848 TEUs) beat August 2016 by 5.2%. Overall, year-to-date import lifts topped 2016 by 5.1%.
Export loads (69,324 lifts, 125,312 TEUs) gained 5.0% on last August, and year-to-date were 2.4% better than 2016.
Export empties (107,555 lifts, 183,655 TEUs) remained strong in 2017, beating August 2016 by 14.7% and 11.3% year-to-date.
At 52,253 units, auto volumes also continued to soar — up 24.6% compared to August 2016. Year-to-date auto volumes are 11.9% better than last year.
