Norway is likely to demand that visiting cruise ships buy electric power in ports to prevent CO2 and NOX emissions. A modern cruise ship emits a little less than four tonnes of CO2 per hour plus NOX. In an article in Norway’s leading technical magazine, Teknisk Ukeblad, it says that Norway could suffer a power shortage in certain popular cruise areas if cruise vessels were to connect to the local grid. If a law is passed to enforce this measure, ports have to provide the power and the technical equipment to convert current from 50 Hz onshore to 60 Hz onboard.
