Ilya Shestakov, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation - head of Rosrybolovstvo (Russian Federal Fisheries Agency), has signed a decree on creation of a working group on arranging a regular shipping line for transportation of fish along the Northern Sea Route. The goal is to ensure regular delivery of fish from the Far East of Russia to the European part of the country, says Development Corporation of Kamchatka (DCK).
The implementation will be supervised by Peotr Savchuk, deputy head of Rosrybolovstvo. The bulk of the group will be formed by Kamchatka representatives of fishery and transport industries as well as regional fishery ministry. Nikolai Pegin, one of the global experts on high-latitude shipping is also invited to join the group.
With its geographic location, the Kamchatka peninsula is the gate to the Arctic while its fishery volumes exceed those of other Far East regions of Russia.
Nikolai Pegin told about previous deliveries of Far East fish by refrigerated cargo fleet by the Northern Sea Route which used to be sporadic and were focused mainly at promotion of the route. According to him, those deliveries featured poor logistics and had no effect on the cost of Far Eastern sea products in in the Russian market. A regular route for high-speed delivery of fish from the Far East would have a different impact.
According to the head of DCK, in the future, Far Eastern sea products can add one million tonnes to the total cargo traffic on the Northern Sea Route. In 2018, NSR cargo transportation showed a record high result of about 18 million tonnes.
