A senior government insider told Lloyd’s List that plans have been drawn up to develop a terminal with three berths at the former Rodman naval facility that would compete with Hutchison Port Holdings’ operation in Balboa.
“It would be a smaller facility than the megaport proposal, representing an investment of around $150m,” said the source. Annual capacity of the terminal could be as much as 750,000 teu with further investment.
A PSA spokesman declined to comment on the matter. However, the Panamanian source, who declined to be named, confirmed the interest of PSA Corp in the facility, but said issues concerning the impact of a large container terminal so close to the navigation channel of the Panama Canal have yet to be resolved with the ACP.
