Ambal ferry returns to Baltijsk-Ust-Luga line after scheduled maintenance
On 24 May 2019, the Ambal, railway ferry of Oboronlogistics, entered the Baltijsk-Ust-Luga line after a scheduled maintenance at the Kanonersky ship repair plant, Oboronlogistics says in a press release.
The Ambal is currently being prepared for loading at the port of Ust-Luga.
Commenting on the situation when the Baltijsk ferry operating on the same route (owned by Black Sea Ferry & Investments LLC) suspended its work on the line due to its debt to bunkering companies, Oboronlogistics officially states that none of obligations or agreements with its partners and consignors were violated during the maintenance period.
The Ambal carries different cargo between Baltijsk and Ust-Luga without crossing the territories of other Baltic states. Average shipload is 8,000 tonnes. The travel time is about 38 hours. Every month the Ambal makes about 6-7 round voyages.
The Ust-Luga-Baltijsk service is a part of a sea route linking the east and the west by an Ust-Luga-Baltijsk- Sassnitz (Germany) and Ust-Luga-Baltijsk-Kiel (Germany) lines. The starting point of the route, the port of Ust-Luga, is located 150 km from Saint-Petersburg. The end point, Baltijsk, is 50 km west of Kaliningrad.
The Ambal is a railway ferry of unrestricted navigation is designed for transportation of railcar trains of Russian standard and ro-ro equipment, 20 and 40-foot trailers. With its design, the ferry can carry trains on three cargo decks. Each of the decks is equipped with five tracks. The Ambal ferry can carry 112 railcars. It can transport dangerous goods and large fuel tank cars (No 66).
"Oboronlogistics" LLC was established in the structure of Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation in 2011. The company has the status of a shipping company and owns the ships that successfully operate in the waters of the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, on the Kerch Strait crossing, the Baltic, Arctic and Far East lines including the Kuril island zone.
