NYK Ship to recruit more Indian crew
The company recruits around 300 Indian marine engineers every year. It has around 30 ships wholly manned by Indians. About 25% of NYK’s technical and managerial workforce are Indians.
The company plans to raise the number of vessels from 660 to 880 by 2010. With the increase in vessel numbers, the company needs to recruit around 200 foreign crew member and cadets each year.
“We find India to be an opportunity market with a growing role in our global operations. We are looking at enhancing our sourcing from India,” chairman and CEO, NYKSM, Captain Takamaru Ishida said. The company established the Mumbai office in 2003 as a recruitment base for crew members in India where basic vocational training for specific functions are imprated. As a result, more NYK crew members are now from India than any other country except the Philippines.
