Cargo traffic on Northern Sea Route to reach 29 million tonnes in 2019, up 1.4 times Y-o-Y

Cargo traffic on the Northern Sea Route (NSR) is expected to reach 29 million tonnes in 2019, up 1.4 times versus the previous year result (20.18 million tonnes), IAA PortNews correspondent cites Nikolay Monko, Acting Head of the Northern Sea Route Administration, as saying at the RAO/СIS Offshore in Saint-Petersburg.

According to the speaker, cargo transported by the Northern Sea Route from the beginning of the year up to 1 October 2019 totaled 23.37 million tonnes including 441,800 tonnes of transit cargo.  In the reporting period, Northern Sea Route Administration issued 713 permits for navigation in the water area of the Northern Sea Route including 90 permits granted to foreign flagged ships.  Two ships were rejected. As of 1 October 2019, 173 shipping companies including 45 foreign ones submitted applications for permits.

According to Northern Sea Route Administration, the growth of cargo transportation on the Northern Sea Route should be attributed to the Yamal-LNG project.
