The Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) has signed a contract to build 64 ships with a combined capacity of 2.8 million tonnes for the Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines). The contract runs till 2015.
The ships will be built at a total cost of US $2.3 billion.
Until 2010, Vinashin will build 19 ships, helping Vinalines raise its fleet's capacity to 2.6 million tonnes. The remainders, mainly cargo ships, container ships and oil tankers, will be built between 2011-2015.
