Latvian railway decreases transportation by 12.2% in Jan. 07, y-o-y
In January 2007 Latvijas dzelzcels (Latvian railway) transported 3.678 million tons of cargo (-12.2%, year-on-year), RZD-Partner reports. Import volume totaled 3.137 million tons (-9.7%) including 2.799 million tons of cargo transported via Latvian ports (-11.6%); 285 thou tons of dry transit cargo (-42.3%); 81 thou tons of internal cargo (-20.6%). Export totaled 175 thou tons (+45.8%) including 104 thou tons transported via Latvian ports (+50.7%). Transportation of oil and oil products amounted to 1.194 million tons (-32.8%), coal - 1.153 million tons (+2.9%), mineral fertilizers - 504 thou tons (-12.3%). Decrease of cargo turnover is attributed to a shut-down of Byelorussian refineries. In 2006 cargo turnover of Latvian railway fell by 11.2%, year-on-year – to 48.731 million tons.
