Russian Railways to invest RUR 1 bln for modernization of Sakhalin’s railways
Russian Railways plans to invest 1 billion roubles in 2007 to modernise Sakhalin’s railway infrastructure and bring into operation two sections of bypass routes and 5 bridges belonging to Sakhalin Railways, OAO RZD press-service reports according to RZD-Partner.
In addition, the reconstruction of Tunnel No. 21 will be continued.
As part of the ongoing modernisation project, in 2006, 8 bridges began operations and the first stage of the reconstruction of Chekhov station and the communication’s lines between the Pobedino and Onor section were completed.
In July 2002, Russia’s Ministry of Communications and the administration of Sakhalin Region decided to convert the narrow-gauge track on the island to broad-gauge in line with the rest of the track in Russia and the CIS in order to speed up the island’s social and economic development.
In addition, the reconstruction of Tunnel No. 21 will be continued.
